Individual Therapy That Starts with Context.

Sometimes the hardest part is not knowing that something needs to change—it is understanding why the same patterns keep happening despite insight, effort, or good intentions. You may feel overwhelmed, stuck, chronically behind, emotionally exhausted, or as though everyday demands require more from you than they seem to require from other people. Individual therapy at Samar helps make sense of those patterns in context and build change around the way you actually function.

A broad starting point when neurodivergence is relevant to your life but no single diagnosis needs to organize the work. Therapy can address mental health, burnout, identity, relationships, executive functioning, sensory and emotional regulation, trauma, and everyday demands.

 Autism-Informed Psychotherapy

Autism-informed psychotherapy begins with a fuller understanding of the person: how they communicate, process information, experience their environment, relate to others, and manage the demands of daily life. That understanding informs treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, relationship difficulties, and other mental health concerns without assuming autism itself is the problem.

ADHD & AuDHD-Informed Psychotherapy

ADHD- and AuDHD-informed psychotherapy considers how attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, sensory needs, and patterns of overwhelm may shape a person’s mental health. That context informs treatment for anxiety, depression, shame, burnout, relationship difficulties, and other concerns without reducing the work to productivity, organization, or “trying harder.”

Intellectual Disability and Mental Health

Psychotherapy for people with intellectual disability should still be psychotherapy. Mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, and significant life changes deserve direct attention, with communication, pacing, structure, and therapeutic methods adapted to the person’s needs rather than assuming distress is simply part of the disability.

Questions About Individual Therapy

Which individual therapy page should I start with?

Start with the page that best reflects what you want your therapist to understand about you first. These are not separate categories, and many people see themselves in more than one. The pages are simply different starting points for understanding what may be shaping your experience.

Can therapy address anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns too?

Yes. Neurodevelopmentally informed therapy is still psychotherapy. Anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship stress, burnout, and other mental health concerns can all be part of the work.  The difference is that we consider how neurodivergence, communication, sensory processing, executive functioning and relationships may affect what you are experiencing and what is likely to help.

What if I am not formally diagnosed?

You do not need a formal autism, ADHD, or other neurodevelopmental diagnosis to begin therapy at Samar. We work with people who are formally diagnosed, self-identified, questioning, or simply looking for therapy that is more responsive to the way they think, communicate, process, and function.

What if I am not sure what is making things difficult?

You do not need to arrive with a clear explanation, diagnosis, or treatment goal. Part of individual therapy can be making sense of what has been difficult, identifying patterns that may not yet have a name, and understanding what is contributing to them before deciding what needs to change.

Samar Neurodivergent Therapy Center is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. Superbills are available for clients who wish to request possible out-of-network reimbursement from their insurance plan, and a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges is provided before services begin, as applicable.
